Fantastic pictures. Offer the Beltane Society use of them, perhaps?

Thanks!

I have e-mailed the Scribe, Mailmaster, and Press e-mail addresses for the Beltane Fire Society - and I will get on their mailing list later tonight.

The Beasties (red people) have been in touch and have had me send to them the full-sized versions - and I will be sending them more from the bonfire which I think would be of interest to individual Beasties only.

I understand that there will be a general meeting some time before Samhuinn - and that I should be present during that meeting - in order to become more involved with the society on the photography side.

(Wow). So what (compact) camera do you use? Is it the same one for most of the other shots you take? (Post on my lj or email me if you don't want to reply here! Thanks!)

[info]two_truths

It's a Sony DSC-V3, and you can see details about it here (a picture of the camera from dpreview).

It is called a "prosumer compact" - a compact with virtually all of the manual controls you would find on a dSLR. It has a higher lines resolution than a Nikon D50 but is not so good in terms of low-light sensitivity. It is almost as fast as a dSLR, and is a lot less clumsy to use.

(The three major reasons for using a big fancy camera are just those - lines resolution, light sensitivity, and shooting speed.)

Thanks! The main bit I wanted to know the equivalent focal length range of the lens (I'm halfguessing at the techie speak here. I mean these numbers: 34 - 136 mm)

Now to find a review comparing yours to the Ricoh GR digital. I think that could be called a prosumer compact too. One day...

[info]kymara

Hm, no I might mean the Ricoh R4...

Sun, May. 7th, 2006 06:50 pm (UTC)
[info]two_truths

Ah, well, the Ricoh R4 is an ultra-compact super-zoom - not worse nor better as such but rather a different sort of camera all-together.

It's more in competition with the Panasonic DMC-TZ1 (which is a bit noisier as a camera but has a longer zoom, a faster lens by one or two stops, and better image stabilisation by one or two stops again).

Like most super-zooms, the Ricoh has a small sensor and as such will suffer a lot of noise in low-light conditions. The Panasonic, although it has noise problems, is about three stops better off in low-light conditions.

Other than that there is not a lot out there - I am sure there is one other ultra-compact super zoom but I cannot find the review right now.

Watch out for similar cameras from Fujifilm, Sony, and Canon. Sony and Canon have good image stabilisation and low noise images in low light; Sony is a notch closer to producing a good ultra compact super zoom. Fuji on the other hand produces by far the lowest noise images in low light conditions - yet they also lack any image stabilisation.

Fuji has just won an award for best compact with it's F30 Zoom - but that is another beast all-together.

Great pictures, but have you noticed that 3, 6 and 13 look like they were shot at a Klan rally?

[info]blueandy: Thank you

Every year I wonder what the procession looks like from outside and this year you/we have surpassed my expectations. There are some great shots in there and it looks like you know the route well enough!

Thanks you, on behalf of the White Warrior Women - loads of shots at last!

[info]two_truths: Re: Thank you

Do you have any info you can give me about the different scenes I photographed? e.g. names, background, etc?

I am producing a portfolio and I would like to include some descriptive text.

Thanks!

[info]two_truths: Re: Thank you

Not that I am aware of; I have unlimited bandwidth, and have refreshed the images and they seem to come back fine.

I think what I will try is to get the relevant ones up in my LJ picture gallery - that should be fairly simple, and it allows commenting on individual pics etc.

I'll let you know once that is done!

Ah! I see your comments in flickr, great, thanks!

I'll have a look through the set of photos I want to use, and will put up a few more later on!

Thanks for your help

Try scribe@beltane.org or at a push press@beltane.org. Thanks for your efforts - the White Warriors on the Acropolis looks like it was done in a studio :)

Acropolis?

Please let me know what that means - and any other info about the scenes in my photos - as I would like to include descriptive text in my portfolio.

Please can I also draw your attention to [info]beltanesociety!

[info]whyness: Re: Thank you

the acropolis is another name for the monument that people walk over at the start (also known as "Edinburgh's Disgrace", etc...)

(Anonymous): holy guacamole!!!

wow, hey those are some reeeeally tight pics there bro!! i was also there shooting away but nothing nearly as good as this i would say! i got some good stuff of the opening act (i was actually only there to officially get Fenfire @ the fire arch) and then "snuck" into the procession (i was wearing the same outfit as my Fenfire friends) and hastily/quietly shot between the drummers in front of me and the bluemen on my sides :)

pics here if anyone's interested:

thanks btw for your comment

i wouldnt worry about getting invited next year as 'official', your photos blow away anything currently out there as far as i've seen or heard of. They'd be quite foolish not to give you a prime spot or at least a pass to get around.

The only prob is, even if you are involved in the procession i dont think they want you to be bothering the procession. I was actually only invited to shoot the opening with Fenfire, then i was on my own. I only got shots because i was wearing the same outfit and so joined the procession after trying to do the blue-man push through the crowd- no luck! Being in the procession and using my foldable LCD, i kept the camera hidden in my cloak and always shot at waist-level or lower.
